The difference between LED display and LED liquid crystal display

  • Before understanding the difference between LED and LCD, first tell everyone what is the led display? The led display refers to a display directly using LEDs (light-emitting diodes) as pixel light-emitting elements, and the light-emitting diodes constituting the array directly emit light of three colors of red, green and blue, thereby forming a color picture. However, since the diameter of the light-emitting diode itself is large, the distance between pixels of the same color is also large (that is, the dot pitch we often say).


    At present, led display has been widely used in large squares, commercials, sports venues, information dissemination, news release, securities trading, etc., to meet the needs of different environments.

    The led display can display varying numbers, text, and graphic images. The reason why LED has been widely recognized and developed rapidly is that it is inseparable from its own advantages.
    It can be used not only in indoor environments but also in outdoor environments, and has the advantages that projectors, TV walls, and LCD screens cannot match.
    Moreover, the LED display screen integrates microelectronic technology, computer technology and information processing into one, and has become the most advantageous public display medium because of its bright color, wide dynamic range, high brightness, long life and stable and reliable work.
    The development prospects of LED are extremely broad, and are currently developing towards higher brightness, higher weather resistance, higher luminous density, higher uniformity of illumination, reliability, and full color.

    Advantages of LED display:

    Brightness of the light: The visible content is clearly visible when the sun is shining directly onto the surface of the screen within the visible distance.

    What is LED backlighting?
    We know that the liquid crystal material itself will not emit light, and the light source on the back of the liquid crystal panel is required to provide light support.
    This kind of illumination source has been dominated by CCFL cold-light tubes in the past. The illumination principle of CCFL cold-light tubes is similar to the fluorescent tubes used in our daily use.
    However, CCFL cold-light lamps are also faced with problems such as uneven brightness, relatively high power consumption, and the inclusion of mercury.
    In contrast, LED backlights do a better job in terms of power consumption and material environmental protection, brightness uniformity is relatively high and the volume can be made thinner.
    Therefore, the prospect of LED backlighting is very optimistic by manufacturers. Let's review the basic principles of liquid crystal displays.

    Simply put, the LED backlight is to replace the traditional CCFL illumination source with an LED (light-emitting diode, usually white light).
    It is divided into dot matrix (also known as direct type) and side light type.
    Among them, the dot matrix type has uniform brightness, high contrast, natural color, high resolution and long life, and is mainly used for high-end models of various brands; although the brightness of the side light type is a little uneven (not carefully seen, it may not be seen) However, the cost is lower, mainly used for the low-end models of each brand. The transition of the backlight module from CCFL to LED can bring many benefits, which can make the brightness of the display screen more uniform, the power consumption of the product is lower, and the shape can be thinner and lighter.
    However, W-LED (white LED) backlights are commonly used in the market. In fact, such backlights only replace the components that emit light, and the display effect is very weak or not improved.
    The RGB-LED (three-color LED), which has an obvious improvement in the display performance of the liquid crystal product, has an obvious improvement in display effect, but at the same time, the production cost is high, so it is applied to a high-priced LCD TV.

    LED backlight advantages

    1. LED backlight compared with CCFL: CCFL cold cathode tube is a contaminated component in liquid crystal display, and it is also one of the key components that affect color saturation.
    LEDs use low-power consumption due to single-point illumination, coupled with the advantages of long life, shortness, lightness and environmental protection, so LEDs have gradually replaced CCFLs for medium and small-sized panels, backlights, and will gradually move to LCDs in the future. Large-size panel backlights such as monitors, notebook computers, and LCD TVs are moving forward.
    In addition, because the color saturation of LEDs can reach nearly 100%, far better than the performance level of CCFL generally 70% to 85%.
    What needs to be specially mentioned is that since LED lighting is much faster than CCFL, the driving of CCFL takes 1 s to 2 s, and the LED only needs 50 ns, so LED can be used as a backlight by using Color Filter-less technology.
    2. LED backlight compared with LCD: Compared with LCD liquid crystal, LED backlight LCD has advantages in terms of volume, brightness, power consumption, material, viewing angle and refresh rate.
    LED backlight and LCD power consumption ratio is about 10:1, and higher refresh rate makes LED backlight better performance in video, can provide 160° wide viewing angle, can display various texts, numbers, Color images and animation information can also play color video signals such as TV, video, VCD, DVD, etc., and multiple displays can also be broadcasted online.

    The single element of the organic LED display has a reaction speed of 1000 times that of the LCD screen. It can also be taken under strong light and is suitable for low temperatures of minus 40 degrees.
    LED technology can be used to produce displays that are thinner, brighter, and clearer than LCDs, and have broad application prospects.
    In general, LED displays and LED-backlit displays are two completely different imaging technologies.
    Nowadays, the large screens of the squares use LED panels, which directly emit different colors of light, and as the technology develops more and more companies have popularized the production technology of small-pitch LED displays, not only can the screen be incomparable. Big, and now more delicate. Long life, energy consumption, color saturation, real, LED display is definitely the future development trend.
    The LED-backlit display replaces the CCFL (the cold light source like the fluorescent lamp) behind the original LCD into an LED. There is not much improvement in color, but the benefits are still many, which can make the screen brightness higher, thinner and brighter. Uniform, lower energy consumption, etc.
    Therefore, the LED-backlit display commonly seen on the market is not actually a replacement of the display technology, but can only be said to be an original replacement. It is also incorrect to confuse LED backlights with LEDs at the same time. LED backlights are better than ordinary LCDs, and LEDs are better than LED backlights.
